about

"A “lost” album from the London-based Australian composer, Richard Pike, who you may also know from Warp’s PVT, as ambient adventurer Deep Learning or from his very fine Salmon Universe tape label. Doesn’t matter, the fact is you’ve found him because ‘How To Breathe’ is a showstopper.

Not so much lost as Pike just taking his sweet time to make it.... Worth it? Very much so. Your ears will thank you."

- Neil Mason, Electronic Sound Mag

--------------------------

"...nothing here disturbs Pike’s established track record for emotionally rich, electronic-leaning music. Pulsing synths are a reliable constant, as is the hypnotic drumming of Stella Mozgawa (Warpaint, Kurt Vile). PVT fans might relish the more pop-driven moments, including Pike’s expansive singing on Don’t Hide In Your Heart Tonight and the sultry stutter of Megapattern Of The World-Soul, while newcomers may gravitate towards the delicate Depeche Mode vibes of Golden Hours. It’s very much an interior album, less concerned with animating limbs than drawing us into its thoughtful reaches"

- Doug Wallen, The Australian ‘Review’

--------------------------

Richard Pike is set to release lost album How To Breathe, a statement that took shape during a period of personal change.

The album faces the displacement and acceptance of moving to a new phase in life. Particular themes involve facing trauma of a loved one, making peace with death, and connection to a city environment - the psychogeographic effects on one's inner life.

The recordings began around 2012: a series of chance collaborations with friend and drummer Stella Mozgawa of Warpaint, finding time to play together in London, Sydney and Los Angeles, in downtime during a tour.Initial sessions were recorded with Jon Hopkins’ collaborator Cherif Hashizume, the songs then being mixed by producer Ben Hillier, renowned for his work with Depeche Mode and Nadine Shah.

How to Breathe opens with Falling out of Buildings, a contemplation about making sense of change, coupled with an absurdist video based around planking and fruit. Songs like Flicker of Light, Don’t Hide in Your Heart Tonight are shrouded in an icy melodrama, patient and understated, reminiscent of purveyors of pop noir The Blue Nile, coupled with the analog-synth-and-drums simplicity of early Gary Numan.

MH370 is an almost improvised ambient meditation finding peace with some unlikely source material. Golden Hours is a song exploring rejection and political power play, mixed by Norwich producer Luke Abbott. The fastest track, the fever-dream of Memory Circa, is a metaphysical exploration, and a collaboration with Brighton dance producer Ital Tek.

The penultimate track Case Is Closed is about an accident that left Richard's partner hospitalised, where he became the primary carer, and the person responsible fled the scene.

“The songs generally are about the void,” Richard says. “The unremarkable places you pass on the street. The big city looking down at you. It’s about the spirit of a place, the way it talks to you."
